Chicago Story
Muddy
waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc....
They came to Chicago in the 50's as
acoustic country blues guitarist.
Nite clubs like Theresa's,
The Checkerboard Lounge,
The Blue Flame were southside
clubs. Crowded with people and
so loud that they drowned out the band !
Club owner's fired these Blues
greats for not playing loud enough.
They couldn't be heard, so why
should they get paid! Muddy and
Howlin' went to "Maxwell St."
where many pawnshops are available
and bought Fender guitars and
amps. They still treated the
instruments like acoustic guitars
and played a little louder but not
enough. Still "Your fired" !
Again !
In frustration all the knobs
on the amps were turned up to
"10". "Can you here me now" ?
End result, they were rehired.
Over time the sound was refined.
